Deck Painting

A deck is functional space outside the house. It is a place where family members sit and relax. The deck is often exposed to wind, sun, rain and other harsh elements of the weather which damage the paint work. Deck painting helps to prolong its life. In addition, it improves the value of the home.

Individuals may opt to paint their deck themselves or seek the services of a professional painter.   The first step in deck painting involves carrying out an evaluation of the deck. Individuals are required to evaluate if the paint, stain, and/or sealer used on the deck still works and if the deck has any structural damages and requires repairs.

Subsequently, the individual should prepare the painting plan. The plan should factor in the weather, the budget as well as the amount of time required to complete the project. For perfect paint adherence, the deck should be completely dry. Deck painting should be planned weeks before the rainy season so as to give the paint/stain enough time to dry.

At this point, the individual may make the necessary preparation for deck painting. Individuals may use a manual scraper or a chemical stripper for purposes of removing old stains or paint. The deck should then be washed with a no-residue solution, rinsed with clean water and left to dry. Ideally, it should dry for not less than one and a half days.

An individual should then select the stain/paint to use on the deck. Numerous types of paints are available. They include opaque, water-based and clear paints. However, exterior paints/stains come highly recommended. This is because they are not only durable, rigid but can also stand foot traffic. In deck painting, before applying solid paints/stains, individuals are advised to first apply an exterior primer. Individuals are advised to choose staining over painting. This is because deck staining followed by sealing leads to a finish that is more long lasting.

Individuals are advised to wear protective eye wear and clothing especially when pressure washing and painting. For a quality deck painting job, individuals should ensure that they do not over spray chemicals and sealers on sensitive areas.
